Tourette Kids Weekend to be Held April 1-3, 2005 The Tourette Syndrome Association of Greater Houston held its second annual kids' weekend, du Ballon Rouge, the weekend of April 1-3, 2005. Once again, the weekend youth outing was held at the "Camp For All" facilities in Burton, Texas near Brenham. We look forward to having our returning campers as well as new campers. Our first Weekend (April 2003) was a great success, far surpassing our initial expectations! du Ballon Rouge Weekend’s goal is to provide our TS campers with an environment that enhances self-esteem, builds confidence, and provides the rare experience of interacting and learning from others afflicted with Tourette Syndrome. The Program du Ballon Rouge Weekend was founded in 2003. The program is designed for children between the ages of 6 and 18 whose primary diagnosis is Tourette Syndrome. Campers are assigned to cabins based on gender and age. The environment is fun, safe, and positive. Campers will experience activities both as a cabin and as a group. Activities include fishing, horseback riding/nature, canoeing, arts and crafts, ropes challenge course, swimming, and team sports. Campers are challenged to reach their individual potential but are not required to participate. The program is able to accommodate the needs of most children with a primary diagnosis of TS but the weekend outing has some limitations in accepting children whose needs are beyond the scope of its resources. Campers must be able to handle daily routines such as dressing and personal hygiene tasks. If you have further questions in this area please contact us. The Facility du Ballon Rouge Weekend is held at a superb permanent facility, "Camp For All" (www.campforall.org), located near Burton, Texas. "Camp For All" is also the site of camps conducted during the year for families and individuals living with cancer, epilepsy, burns, muscular dystrophy, developmental disabilities, and other chronic illnesses. "Camp For All" is staffed by professionally trained and often certified individuals, many of whom have experience in medical and special needs fields. The "Camp For All" staff are compassionate and supportive of all their campers. From Houston, it is approximately 85 miles west off of US 290. TS Counselors and Staff The du Ballon Rouge Weekend staff are all volunteers and many are members of the Tourette Syndrome Association of Greater Houston. The du Ballon Rouge Weekend staff includes adults with Tourette Syndrome, outdoor experience, and medical training. All counselors and volunteers attend training sessions and are prepared for the weekend. With the proper executed parental authorization (where required), the medical personnel will handle all medications and medical issues for the campers.
